Professor Dick Luthy was awarded the Perry L. McCarty Founders' Award at the 2023 Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) Research & Education Conference in Boston.

This award is given annually to an environmental engineering or science professor whose record of excellence stands a reflection of the significant contributions of Professor McCarty to environmental engineering education, research, and practice.

Professor Luthy was president of the AEESP in the late 1980s, and in the early 2000s he worked with others to establish the AEESP Foundation to endow awards and other activities. He then lead the fund raising to endow the Perry McCarty Founders’ Award.

The AEESP has faculty members from across the United States and Canada. It assists in improving education and research programs and serves the profession by providing information to government agencies and the public.

Professor Luthy is the Silas H. Palmer Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His area of teaching and research is environmental engineering and water quality with applications to water reuse, storm water use, and systems-level analysis of our urban water challenges. His research addresses organic contaminants and contaminants of emerging concern in both engineered and natural systems.
