Civil Engineering - Structures/Construction

csmythe@stanford.edu

Hi! My name is Claire, and I'm a Junior majoring in Civil and Environmental Engineering on the Dry Track. I chose CEE as my major because I love seeing my work turn into tangible things before my eyes and combining calculations and aesthetics to create usable and beautiful structures. I'm passionate about finding ways to create more sustainable and efficient building processes, and I want to continue diversifying and improving the construction industry.

I'm a member of the ASCE, the American Society for Civil Engineers, which is a professional organization that is dedicated to the advancement of civil engineering practices. We meet often, and it's a great way to meet your fellow CEE majors and be introduced into a wider network of professional engineers! I am also in the Seismic Club where we design earthquake-resistant towers and compete against other universities. You get to create and submit your own designs and applying what you learn in a fun and competitive setting is a great experience.

This past summer I worked as a Project Engineer Intern at DPR Construction where I worked on a jobsite constructing new buildings as a liaison between the subcontractors and the architects. I learned a lot about the industry and the dynamics between trades, and I met many different people from different career backgrounds. It was an amazing experience to see the building going up after studying the plans, and I learned a lot about best practices to enhance the construction process.

If you have any questions about major requirements, creating a 4-year plan, or any questions at all about civil engineering or Stanford in general, shoot me an email. I'd love to meet you and help you find your way at Stanford!
