Student Spotlight: Jayden Wan Stanford ASCE

As a first year undergraduate student interested in civil engineering with a structural focus,  I’ve found a strong sense of purpose in helping rebuild Stanford’s chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). I’m part of a group of student leaders working to bring new energy to a community that lost momentum during the pandemic. Stanford’s ASCE Chapter dimmed during that time, and many CEE undergraduates felt increasingly isolated within what is already a relatively small department. In response, students, faculty, and staff came together with a shared goal: to revitalize the chapter, restore a sense of community on campus, and expand Stanford’s network with nearby universities and employers.

Over the 2025–26 academic year, our team has revitalized general meetings and reestablished Stanford’s participation in the EERI Seismic Design Competition. We’ve also focused on bringing people together through social events, professional development workshops, an Earth Day beach clean-up, and opportunities to attend ASCE conferences. These efforts have helped rebuild not just an organization, but a sense of belonging and connection within the CEE community.

Looking ahead, we’re hoping to expand even further. Plans for the coming year include regular study sessions, alumni speaker series, internship fairs, and more ways to highlight student experiences. At the core of it all is our mission: to create a supportive and connected community for students interested in all aspects of civil engineering—one that promotes professional development, fosters peer connection, and helps members explore potential paths within the field while building strong networks.

The founding executive team consists of Jaelen Sobers (President), Sufiyan Javed (Professional Vice President), Isaiah Davies (Social Vice President), Gracie Wallace (Treasurer), Sasha Hyacinth (Secretary). Next year's incoming executive team are the following people: Deena Safiulla (President), Daniel Castillo (Professional Vice President), Jack Quale (Social Vice President), Jayden Wan (Treasurer), Mason Harris (Secretary), Harper Whitman (Media Coordinator)

Being part of this rebuilding process has already shaped how I think about engineering—not just as a technical discipline, but as a collaborative and community-driven one. As I continue my journey at Stanford, I’m excited to keep learning, contributing, and helping lay the foundation for something that will last well beyond my time here.
