New CEE undergraduate major offered in Sustainable Architecture+Engineering
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, jointly housed in the School of Engineering and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, has launched a new undergraduate major that integrates architecture and engineering coursework as well as practical experience to address the design challenges of our rapidly changing world.
The new Sustainable Architecture+Engineering major will focus on the dynamic integration of architecture and engineering. The program seeks to equip students with the creative and analytical mindsets and skill sets needed to shape a sustainable future. By melding innovative technologies and building systems with design thinking across multiple scales, students will develop solutions that address the planet’s pressing needs.
The new interdisciplinary curriculum is designed to create alchemic relationships between architecture and allied engineering disciplines. Through a core sequence of studios, students will work on a range of building types and sites, learning how to incorporate sustainable design strategies, structural design, and building envelope performance into their designs. By integrating engineering principles into the early design process, students will learn how to design for optimized performance, resilience, and beauty.
The new major will be led by a diverse team of architects and engineers. CEE faculty Iro Armeni and Catherine Gorlé will steer the program as the Faculty Directors for this new major; and long-time lecturers Glenn Katz, Beverly Choe, and Ethen Wood will act as Associate Directors. Glenn, Beverly and Ethen each run architectural practices, and served as lecturers in the former Architectural Design program for a combined 50 years. The Associate Team will guide curriculum development, course content and create a rich learning experience for the students.
