Smart Grid Seminar: Dr. Haiwang Zhong, Tsinghua University: Recent Development of Demand Response and its Implementation in China

Abstract: Demand response (DR) offers one of the most promising opportunities for engineering sustainable electricity services in the future. In this talk, the speaker will introduce recent development of demand response, including coupon-incentive based demand response (CIDR), integrated dispatch of generation and load (IDGL), and integrated demand response (IDR) in multi-energy systems. In addition, the speaker will introduce several ongoing pilot projects on demand response in China, including the smart grid pilot project in Ningxia Autonomous Region and the Energy Internet (EI) pilot project in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province.


Bio: Haiwang Zhong (IEEE Senior Member, IEEE PES Member, IET Member), received both the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University in 2008 and 2013, respectively. His research interests include power system operations and planning, electricity markets and demand response. He has published 90+ papers. He developed the SCUC/SCED software that has been applied in 10+ provincial power dispatch centers in China. He is deeply involved in the new round of electricity market reform in China. He currently serves as the Vice Chair of the IEEE PES Working Group on Demand Response, Secretary of the Architecture Subcommittee under the IEEE PES Smart Building and Load Control Committee, Secretary of the IEEE PES Task Force on Big Data Applications in Power Distribution Systems. He serves as the Editor for International Transactions on Electrical Energy Systems, Youth Associate Editor for Journal of Modern Power System and Clean Energy, CSEE Journal of Power and Energy Systems. He was awarded the ProSPER.Net Young Scientist Award. He was awarded 2 provincial Science & Technology Awards. He won the Gold Medal in 44th Geneva International Invention Exhibition in 2016.
