Structural Engineering & Mechanics

Main content start

The Structural Engineering and Mechanics and Computation (SEM) programs engages in research and offers courses in a broad range of areas related to structural analysis and design, risk analysis, mechanics & computation, and sustainable materials and structures. Advancements in probabilistic hazard and risk analysis, nonlinear dynamic analysis, structural health monitoring, and earthquake loss assessment pioneered by Stanford have had major impacts on professional practice. Our program offers an exciting and challenging atmosphere for learning and professional advancement. Employers of past SEM graduates include engineering services firms, software companies supporting the engineering industry, national laboratories, universities, and startup companies.

Much of our research and professional activities are operated through the John A. Blume Earthquake Engineering Center. The center houses laboratories, hosts students, and supports outreach activities. Complementary opportunities are available through the associated Center for Integrated Facility Engineering. Apart from their role in focusing activities, these centers also facilitate interdisciplinary research and education with faculty in other departments at Stanford

We offer 2 MS programs for all students starting in the Autumn Quarter of 2023 and thereafter:
