Stanford University’s Atmosphere/Energy program bridges the gap between the two key disciplines of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Fossil-fuel energy contributes directly to air pollution and climate change. Atmospheric winds‚ solar radiation and precipitation are sources of renewable wind‚ wave‚ solar and hydroelectric power. Combining the study of Atmosphere and Energy is a natural choice because the best ways to mitigate atmospheric problems are to increase the efficiency with which energy is used‚ optimize the use of natural energy resources, and understand the effects of energy technologies on the atmosphere.

Environmental Engineering

The Environmental Engineering program has a dual mission: to develop state-of-the-art knowledge, models, and processes that form the core of environmental engineering practice, and to train and educate current and future academic and professional environmental leaders.

We pursue these goals by synthesizing physical, biological, and chemical facets of engineering and science along with elements of the social sciences into our research and teaching. Ultimately, our goal is to protect and sustain natural resources and human health by contributing to the sustainable development of physical infrastructure, including systems for wastewater treatment, water supply, renewable energy, and resilient coastal environments.

Research and teaching in the Environmental Engineering (EnvEng) program focus on five themes including:

  • Aquatic Chemistry & Biology and Process Engineering
  • Environmental and Geophysical Fluid Mechanics
  • Environmental Modeling and Simulation
  • Human Health and the Environment
  • Hydrology and Water Resources

Structural Engineering & Geomechanics

The Structural Engineering and Geomechanics (SEG) Program offers research opportunities and courses in a broad range of areas related to structural analysis and design, geomechanics, risk management and construction of civil engineering facilities.

Areas of research emphasis include performance-based engineering, computational mechanics, design construction integration, earthquake engineering, reliability and risk analysis for hazard mitigation, sensoring and health monitoring, and engineering informatics. The programs offer three graduate degrees — a professionally oriented master’s degree and more research-oriented engineer and doctoral degrees. With the opportunity to balance strong engineering fundamentals with modern computational methods and advanced technologies, academic programs can be designed to meet the needs of students wishing to launch careers as professional engineers, researchers and engineering educators, or to work in related disciplines.

Sustainable Design & Constructioin

Sustainable Design & Construction

The Sustainable Design and Construction program prepares students for careers in the built environment: researching, designing, building, and managing sustainable buildings and infrastructure to maximize their lifecycle economic value as well as their net contribution to environmental and social functions and services.

The Master’s Degree in SDC has four tracks (Management, Structures, Energy and Sustainable Urban Systems.)

Core and elective classes cover topics covering cutting-edge information technology such as sensor networks embedded in “intelligent” buildings and infrastructure, micro and macro strategy on infrastructure development across the globe as well as entrepreneurship and organization design for new businesses, and corporate or governmental initiatives aimed at enhancing the sustainability of the built environment.

Employers of past SDC graduates include architectural and engineering design firms, general contractors across a range of sizes and geographies, design-build firms and developers focused on delivering green buildings and infrastructure; energy and sustainability consultants; facility management and sustainability departments within large companies; clean-tech startups and venture funds. Several students have also targeted opportunities in the AEC industry by launching their own business directly out of the SDC program.

Areas of research and coursework: Management and finance for complex and large-scale projects; collaborative interdisciplinary, multi-stakeholder planning and design processes; lifecycle assessment of products and processes; sustainable construction materials and practices; green, performance-based architecture; renewable power generation and smart electrical grids; and data-driven models for decision making on wicked problems in urban contexts.
